publication design & editorial concepts

Emilio Macchia & Laura Klimaite

With experience in the field of graphic design for publishing and exhibition, Emilio Macchia (curator of Fahrenheit39 Art Book Fair (www.emiliomacchia.com) together with graphic designer Laura Klimaite (www.lauraklimaite.com) will introduce the participant to their work and lead them through the design process of a publication. From the analysis and editing of the contents, the organization of text and images, the design of the page, from the printing to the binding, every participant will produce their own publication according to its content.

Participants will be introduced to the crucial steps of the publication design process: First day - discussing collected material (texts and/or images); purifying the idea of the publication; editing the content; organising the content into the medium of publication. Second day: creating layout for the publication; designing the cover; printing and presenting the publication.

As the result, publication can be any kind of type: personal zine, poetry book, cooking recipe book, work portfolio, personal diary etc.

Restrictions for publications:

  • Format: A4, A5 size
  • Color: Black/white
  • Printing technique: Laser Printer

This two day workshop is particularly useful for design, photography, art etc. students and professionals, and all anyone interested in self-publishing. Basic knowledge of InDesign is beneficial, although not necessary.

Price: 120€ (both days), students – 90€ (both days)

Apie vadovą / About the tutor

Emilio Macchia (Ravenna, Italy 1982) graduated from the ISIA of Urbino in 2010 with a thesis project about the Dutch Clandestine Publishing during the WWII (Menthor Leonardo Sonnoli), from 2010 to 2012 was researcher at the design department of the Jan van Eyck Academie in Maastricht, the Netherlands. As well as research-oriented projects he works on commission-based project within the fields of art and culture. From 2010 Emilio Macchia is artistic director of Fahrenheit 39 art book fair. From 2012 he is the director of the residency program OFFSET in Ravenna, Italy. From 2013 he is in charge of the editorial board of the Osservatorio Fotografico. In 2014 he found EEE, a graphic design studio based between Ravenna and Bologna, together with Erica Preli. From 2015 he is professor of the “Art Direction” class at the visual and motion design BA at the Academy fine art of Urbino. He gives workshops, talks and lectures in europe for several universities, institutions and events.

Laura Klimaite is Lithuanian graphic designer based in Berlin. She graduated in graphic design from ArtEZ Institute of Arts (Arnhem, the Netherlands), where she was taught by Thomas Castro (LUST), Vinca Kruck (Metahaven), Remco van Bladel and other internationally renowned dutch graphic designers. The program is known for its conceptual thinking and experimental typography.
Laura has bachelor degree in design from Vilnius Art Academy (Lithuania), she was studying in Bergen National Academy of Arts (Norway), did internship at Esen Karol LTD design studio in Istanbul (Turkey). Laura gives speeches and workshops related to typography, teaches typography in BTK - Hochschule für Gestaltung in Berlin. Currently working for different range of clients and projects, focusing on editorial design.
